Embracing the Present: A Letter to My Travel Bestie

Embracing the Present: A Letter to My Travel Bestie

 Dear Travel Bestie,

As I look back over my life, I’ve come to realize just how valuable each moment truly is. There are moments when I wish I could go back in time and reassure my younger self not to fret so much, to live more fully, and to savor every experience. It's funny how the advice we once dismissed from older folks now resonates deeply as we grow older.

My nephew is about to embark on an exciting journey to study in France, and I recently found myself giving him the same advice I once received: "Make the most of this time in your life and embrace every moment." I felt like I was channeling the wisdom of those older voices from our past, the ones who used to say, "Enjoy it now because before you know it, it will be gone."

At 18, I didn't fully grasp the significance of those words. I was young and felt unstoppable, not realizing how quickly time passes. Now, as I share this wisdom with my nephew, it strikes me that someone twice my age could be telling me the same thing right now: "Seize this moment in your life, be present because you'll never get it back."

It's interesting how history has a way of repeating itself. Here I am, the youngest I’ll ever be again, facing new concerns just like I did when I was 18. But this time, I’m determined to follow my own advice. There's no point in looking back with regret, wishing I had lived more in the present.

I still have plenty to figure out and questions about my future, but my focus is on staying present. Life is a series of decisions, paths to choose, and questions to answer. It's up to each of us to fully live our lives and be present in each moment. I want to make the most of this time, just as I’m encouraging my nephew to do.

Since you're someone who understands the importance of living fully and appreciating the moment, I would love to hear your thoughts and insights. How do you stay present and make the most of your time? What advice would you give to someone struggling to live in the moment?

I look forward to hearing your wisdom and I’m always grateful for our shared adventures.

Warmly,

Emily

Dear Emily,

Your letter touched me deeply, and it’s a wonderful reminder of how precious each moment in life is. Your nephew is so fortunate to have someone like you to offer such heartfelt advice. Reflecting on our own journeys can truly illuminate the path for others.

As you focus on staying present and making the most of this time, I have a suggestion for a destination that might be just what you need: Kyoto, Japan. This city beautifully combines the tranquility of ancient temples with the vibrant energy of modern life, offering a perfect setting to immerse yourself in the present moment.

Here are some tips and tricks to help you prepare for and maximize this experience:

1. Plan Mindfully: While it's important to have an itinerary, leave room for spontaneous adventures. Kyoto is filled with hidden gems, from serene gardens to quaint tea houses. Allow yourself the flexibility to explore without a strict schedule.

2. Cultural Immersion: Engage with the local culture as much as possible. Participate in a traditional tea ceremony, visit the iconic Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), and take a stroll through the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. These experiences will ground you in the present and enrich your understanding of Japan's rich heritage.

3. Mindful Practices: Kyoto is a hub for mindfulness and meditation. Spend time in Zen gardens like Ryoan-ji or join a meditation session at one of the many temples. These practices will help you stay centered and appreciate the beauty of each moment.

4. Local Cuisine: Savoring local food is a delightful way to stay present. Try traditional dishes like kaiseki (a multi-course meal), fresh sushi, and matcha desserts. Visit Nishiki Market to immerse yourself in the vibrant culinary scene.

5. Connect with Nature: Kyoto is surrounded by stunning natural landscapes. Take a hike up Mount Kurama or enjoy a boat ride on the Hozu River. Nature has a wonderful way of bringing us back to the present moment.

6. Journaling: Bring along a journal to document your thoughts, experiences, and reflections. Writing can be a powerful tool for staying present and capturing the essence of your journey.

Remember, Emily, the goal of this trip is not just to see new places but to truly experience them. Let each moment unfold naturally and savor the journey as much as the destination.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your thoughts. I'm excited for your adventure and look forward to hearing all about it. If you need any more tips or help with planning, I'm always here for you.

Safe travels and enjoy every moment!

 XOXO,

Thera Anastasia,
